Heavy rain in parts of Chennai, Orange alert issued

Heavy rains lashed parts of the city and neighboring districts till the early hours of Monday, November 8, 2021. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for some districts.including Chennai And heavy to very heavy rain may continue in Cuddalore till Tuesday morning.

Chennai Nungambakkam received 7.3 cm of rain till 8 am on Monday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred at other places in Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts during the last 24 hours till Monday morning.

Cholavaram recorded about 13 cm, Sriperumbudur and Kundrathur (7 cm) and Poonamallee (9 cm) rain. Some weather stations in the city including Villivakkam (6 cm), Nandanam (4 cm) and MRC Nagar (3 cm) recorded moderate rain till 8.30 am on Monday.

With a cyclonic circulation forming over Bay of Bengal off South AP and North TN coast, IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rains over Chennai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam and Puducherry on Monday. There is a possibility of heavy rain in 12 districts like Pudukottai, Salem, Karur and Madurai.

Due to good rains and inflows in five reservoirs, the quantum of water released on Monday also remained the same. While about 2,000 cusecs (cubic feet per second) of water is being released from the reservoirs of Chembarambakkam and Red Hills, about 4,883 cusecs of water is being released from Poondi reservoir at Kosthalaiyar at 6 am on Monday.

The Red Hills reservoir received 9 cm of rain and Chembarambakkam 5 cm, till 6 am, water resources department officials said, adding that the release of water would be increased depending on the rainfall in the catchment areas and the flow in water bodies.
