Heavy rain in Tamil Nadu; Schools in Chennai, 3 districts closed: 10 points

Chennai:
Heavy rains in Chennai and adjoining districts have prompted authorities to take emergency measures, including ordering schools in four districts to remain closed. The National Disaster Response Force has been called in to assist with the rescue operation.

  1. Schools in Chennai and three other districts have been ordered to remain closed for the next two days as heavy rains lashed many parts of north coastal Tamil Nadu.

  2. It rained overnight in Chennai, which recorded 21 cm of rain till 8.30 am today. Several low-lying areas of the city were flooded.

  3. The Meteorological Department has predicted that due to the effect of a cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal, there will be heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places over North Coastal Tamil Nadu on Sunday.

  4. While this spell of rain is likely to subside after tonight, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of more rain on Tuesday and Wednesday.

  5. Water is being released from Chembarambakkam lake, with the lakes around Chennai swelling. This 85.4 feet high lake now has water up to 82.35 feet. In 2015, Chennai was flooded due to sudden excessive discharge from Chembarambakkam lake.

  6. Officials said this regular discharge of water will not lead to flooding but if there is excess rainfall, the areas around Muduchur may be inundated.

  7. A flood warning has been issued in Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts along the Adyar river. Schools in Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts have been ordered to remain closed.

  8. Chief Minister MK Stalin discussed preparations with district collectors and visited 14 waterlogged areas including Egmore, Padi Bridge, Padi Bridge and Jawahar Nagar.

  9. Following a request from the state government, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed four teams to assist in the rescue operations.

  10. Road and rail services have been affected due to heavy rains. Although some flights were delayed, there was no major disruption in air services.
