Heavy rain warning in these states; IMD issues ‘Orange’, ‘Yellow’ alert

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a well marked low pressure area is very likely to occur over west-central and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal during the next 36 hours. It also issued an ‘Orange’ alert for very heavy rains in several districts.

The IMD said that the LPA which is centered over South Odisha and adjoining North Andhra will intensify due to which there is a possibility of heavy rainfall in various districts of Odisha. It is pertinent to mention here that rain activities are already increasing in many parts of the state.

Orange and yellow alert issued

Yellow alert has been issued for Koraput, Malkangiri, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nayagarh, Khurda and Puri districts.

The IMD has also issued an ‘orange’ warning of torrential rains in several districts of Odisha in the next two days. It warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall of 70-200 mm at some places in Koraput, Kandhamal, Gajapati and Ganjam districts on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Met Office has advised fishermen not to venture into the deep sea due to continuous disturbance in the Bay of Bengal.

Heavy rain forecast in Maharashtra

An official said that the IMD has also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coastal and central parts of Maharashtra over the weekend. The forecast said that isolated areas of coastal districts like Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg would receive heavy to very heavy rainfall from Friday to Sunday.

The official said that light rain will continue over Madhya Maharashtra on Friday, although it may intensify over the weekend in districts like Pune and Satara. The IMD forecast said that the rains would continue in parts of Marathwada and Vidarbha till Sunday.

According to Meteorological Bureau parameters, heavy rainfall ranges from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in a 24-hour period, while the term “very heavy” refers to rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm in 24 hours.
