GUWAHATI: Four people died in a massive landslide in Guwahati amid heavy rains and flooded the city, officials said on Tuesday. A massive land on a hillock at Nijarapar in the Borgaon area buried a house, which held four people. An official of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) gave this information.
“The landslide occurred around 1 am mainly due to incessant rain. ASDMA District Project Officer (Kamrup Metropolitan) Kaustav Talukdar said, “No one else is trapped so far.
With this, the total number of people who lost their lives in this year’s floods and landslides has gone up to 42.
The talukdar said landslides were reported from half a dozen other places in the city, including Kamakhya, Kharghuli, Hengrabari, Silpukhuri and Chandmari Colony, but there were no casualties.
Due to the incessant rains since Monday night, all the major roads of the city were flooded till their knees, and the water level has crossed the waist. The approach road of Guwahati railway station was also submerged in water.
Scores of vehicles, including school buses, were stuck on the roads as their engines failed in floodwaters, which have also entered hundreds of homes in the ‘smart’ city.
Heavy traffic jams were reported from many areas and vehicles were stuck for several hours.
Flood was reported from MLA’s residence at Zoo Road, RG Barua Road, GS Road, Nabeen Nagar, Anil Nagar, Hatigaon, Ganeshguri, Hedayatpur, Dispur, Lachit Nagar. Tarun NagarJyotikuchi, Ghoramara, VIP Road, Rajgarh Road, Jorabat and Chhatribari, etc.
The residents of Nabeen Nagar came out of the house at night and came on the footpaths of Rajgarh in the heart of the city.
He alleged that no one from the administration reached him and everyone, including children, did not have water.
In view of the incessant rains, the Kamrup Metropolitan District Administration has issued an advisory asking people not to step out unless absolutely necessary.
It tweeted, “If your residence is prone to waterlogging / landslides, please consider moving to a safer place or please contact the district administration at 1077/86381 12297.” The Regional Meteorological Center in Guwahati on Monday issued a ‘red alert’ for Assam and Meghalaya and predicted “extremely heavy rainfall” from Tuesday to Thursday.
