Heavy traffic jam in Delhi on new year

Heavy traffic jams were witnessed on Sunday in several parts of the national capital, including Connaught Place and India Gate, where thousands of people gathered to celebrate the New Year.

According to Delhi PoliceHeavy thunder was also reported near ITO intersection and Akshardham temple.

Police said traffic was also affected as a group of people Jain Community Protested near India Gate on Sunday. They took out the march to protest against the Jharkhand government’s recent decision to declare Sammed Shikharji, a pilgrimage site of the Jain community, as a tourist destination, a police official said.

Many passengers took to Twitter to share their problems.

One of the passengers tweeted, “Massive chaos and long traffic jam around India Gate on Sunday and Saturday. This happens every year.”

Another commuter said that the central Delhi Heavy traffic was seen around Mandi House, India Gate, Connaught Place, Pandara Road, Akbar Road, Shahjahan Road and Man Singh Road.

Rahul Sharma, who was traveling from Bhogal towards Khajuri Khas, said, “There was heavy traffic near Bhajanpura and Pusta Road in northeast Delhi’s Sonia Vihar. I had to take several alternate routes to reach my destination.”

Dr Rajendra Prasad Road and Akbar Road were among the areas in Lutyens’ Delhi where people witnessed thunder.

Rohan Singh, a resident of South Delhi, said traffic was in a mess near Delhi Zoo and Pragati Maidan, where people were stuck for hours.

A Twitter user said that there was heavy traffic near Nizamuddin Railway Station and Mathura Road.

Another user said that there was heavy traffic from Kodiapul to Red Fort.

Kartavya Path in the national capital looked like a picnic spot as thousands thronged with family and friends on New Year.

Earlier called Rajpath, the Kartavya Path from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September this year.

Police said that due to the New Year being a Sunday, the traffic was very heavy.

Traffic snarls were witnessed in parts of central Delhi including Connaught Place and India Gate on Saturday as well on New Year’s Eve.

Officials said the Delhi Police had deployed over 18,000 personnel in the national capital to keep a close watch on any violations and ensure security during the New Year celebrations.

He said that a total of 125 places have been identified in the city to check drunken driving.
