Around 28 people were aboard a mechanized country boat carrying goods from Dhubri on Thursday after it collided with a pillar of the under-construction Dhubri-Phulbari bridge on the Brahmaputra. Most of the passengers swam safely to the bank at Bhasanir, while others were rescued by locals, rescue teams of NDRF and SDRF, except the circle officer.
A total of 17 deep divers were engaged on the second day of the search and rescue operation. Fifteen rescue boats and drones were used in the operation.
A circle officer along with a field officer of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority was sent to inspect the erosion-affected area. They boarded a cargo boat in a river area to cross the river channel.
On an FIR lodged by the IWT, the police on Friday arrested two engineers – Rajesh Kumar Yadav and Harish Tiwari of L&T Construction, who are constructing the Dhubri-Phulbari bridge.
