Hero Motosports Announces Dakar 2022 Team; CS Santosh out due to injury

The Hero MotoSports team will participate in the Dakar Rally in Rally 2022, featuring Franco Cami and Joaquim Rodrigues, as Sebastian Bühler and CS Santosh are still recovering from past injuries.

Hero MotoSports Team Rally, the motorsport arm of Hero MotoCorp, has announced its entry into the Dakar Rally 2022. The team will compete with Franco Cami and Joaquim Rodrigues as a two-rider squad. This will be the team’s sixth consecutive participation in the Dakar, one of the most gruesome rallies in the world. The Dakar goes back to Saudi Arabia, with the rally taking place between January 1-14, 2022. India’s CS Santosh is out along with Sebastian Buehler. Two riders are still recovering from injuries.

Joaquim Rodrigues has been with Hero MotoSports since its inception and this will be the rider’s sixth Dakar with the team.

Wolfgang Fischer, Team Manager, Hero Motosports Team Rally, said, “We have had a great year so far and we look forward to starting next year with a strong performance in Dakar 2022. The team has been preparing well, and here we are. Even though we are two riders short, we are confident of a great campaign in Dakar. The bikes are also performing very well, and we are excited to be back for our sixth attempt with the final test. I also wish our team riders CS Santosh and Sebastian Bühler a speedy recovery and hope to be back at camp soon.”

Both Cami and Rodrigues have been podium finishers this year at various cross-country rallies including the Silk Way Rally and the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. Rodrigues finished the FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship 2021 in fourth place overall. It will also be Jerrod’s sixth year with the team in Dakar since joining the board in 2016. Meanwhile, it will be Cammy’s first time in Dakar with Hero. The rider, however, has participated in the rally on five occasions in the past. The riders will be riding the Hero 450 rally bike, which has seen an improvement in top speed and acceleration.

Joaquim Rodrigues, Rider, Hero Motosports Team Rally said, “It feels great to be back in Dakar after a year of steady growth for myself and for the entire team. The team’s performance so far in the season has been commendable. After me 2021 The best finish ever in Dakar, this year also brought me my first FIM Championship podium at the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. Along with the team, I’ve been working especially hard for Dakar since then, and I’m one of the greats. I look forward to the month ahead.”

Franco Cami, rider, Hero Motosports Team Rally, said, “My first year with Hero Motosports has been an exciting one, and I have had the opportunity to represent the team at the Dakar Rally 2022. We are entering Dakar after something impressive. Walks in recent months, including a podium finish for me in the Silk Way Rally. The 2022 Dakar Rally will once again take place in Saudi Arabia and the riders will cover a total distance of 8,000 km in 14 days.

Hero also clarified that its other riders, including Sebastian Bühler and India’s CS Santosh, are still recovering from injuries and will have to sit it out. Bühler is the winner of the Hungarian Baja 2021, which was on the roster for Dakar 2022 but had to withdraw due to injury at the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. CS Santosh, on the other hand, is still recovering from the crash that happened at the 2021 Dakar rally.

The 2022 Dakar Rally will run in 12 stages over 14 days, with a brief introduction phase on January 1. This rally will pass through different areas through different cities of the country. A rest day is planned for January 8 in the capital Jeddah, when the rally will reach the halfway point. The 2022 Dakar will see riders cover a total distance of 8,000 km, including contact stages. A total of 430 vehicles will participate in the rally out of which 149 are motorcycles. The 44th edition of the Dakar Rally will also be the opening race of the newly formed World Rally Raid Championship (W2RC).

The Rally Raid Championship, replacing the Cross-Country Rallies Championship, will run for five rounds with Dakar, followed by the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, Rally Kazakhstan, Andalusia Rally and Rally du Maroc.
