Hijab controversy: National flag hoisted in college campus in Shivamogga

Members of the Shivamogga district unit of the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress party, unfurled the national flag at the Government First Grade College campus in Bapuji Nagar, Shivamogga on the morning of February 9. This is the same place where a student hoisted the saffron flag during a protest against the hijab on February 8.

A group of NSUI workers led by District President Vijay Kumar and State Secretary HS Balaji went to the spot carrying the tricolor. One of them climbed the flag post to tie the flag. Later he sang the national anthem.

The state government has declared a holiday for colleges for three days starting February 9, as protests against the hijab turned violent at several places, including Shivamogga, on February 8.

NSUI members said that the controversy over the hijab was created for political reasons. Students should drop the issue and return to classes.
