Himachal BJP organizes ‘ghar wapsi’ of leaders ahead of year-end assembly elections

In what is seen as an attempt to reach out to those leaving, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Himachal Pradesh got a shot in the arm with the return of some senior leaders on Thursday ahead of the assembly elections this year. Had it. recently left. The party has launched a “homecoming” mission ahead of the year-end elections.

Among those who returned to the party on Thursday was Chetan Bragata, who contested as an independent candidate in the Jubbal-Kotkhai bypoll following the death of his father. Bragata was expelled for “anti-party” activities during the 2017 assembly elections. Also back is Urmil Thakur from Hamirpur. The party has managed to field Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Rakesh Chaudhary from Kangra. Choudhary had switched from Congress to AAP.

Welcoming them, Himachal Pradesh BJP chief Suresh Kashyap said the re-entry of senior leaders would help in running a “united campaign” for the elections.

Observers say it was necessary to rejoin the disgruntled leaders following fears that the party might leave. According to sources, the BJP was anticipating the possibility of some leaders leaving the party, especially in Kangra district.

With former BJP state president Khimi Ram and Indu Verma, wife of three-time BJP MLA from Theog, Rakesh Verma, joining the Congress recently, the saffron party decided to press alarm bells and stop more leaders from leaving.

An important core group meeting on Wednesday was attended by Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, state BJP chief Suresh Kashyap, former CM PK Dhumal, organizational secretary Pawan Rana, Rajya Sabha members Indu Goswami and Sikandar Kumar and senior party functionaries.
