Himachal CM Thakur, eight others file nominations for assembly elections

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur and eight others filed their nominations on Wednesday, the third day of filing of nominations for the state assembly elections to be held on November 12. With this, the number of candidates who have filled the form has increased to eleven.

Thakur filed his nomination papers from Siraj assembly constituency in Mandi district. Thakur, 57, handed over the papers to the Thunag sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), returning officer (RO) of the constituency, after taking blessings from his mother Briku Devi and deities.

He reached his native place Tandi from Delhi this morning. Thereafter, he paid homage to ‘Kuldevi’ in Mata Siddhajogni, who is called ‘Kuldevata’ at Bharari Mata Temple in Tandi village and ‘Dev Matlodh Maharaj’ in Sivakari village.

After that, Thakur addressed a rally at Kutha (Janjehli) from where he along with his supporters proceeded towards Thunak SDM office to file nomination papers. Thakur, a five-time MLA, was accompanied by his wife Sadhna Thakur and daughters Chandrika and Priyanka.

Born on January 6, 1965, in Tandi village of Murahag Panchayat in Mandi district, Thakur won his first assembly election in 1998 from Chachiot constituency and has been an MLA from Chachiot since then, known as Seraj Assembly constituency after delimitation.

Thakur is trying his luck for the seventh time as he unsuccessfully contested his first election from Chachiot assembly constituency in 1993, when he was just 26 years old.

Congress candidate Rajesh Dharmani (50) filed his nomination from Ghoomarwin seat in Bilaspur district. Similarly, from Balh (SC) seat, Prakash Chaudhary (60) and Inder Singh Gandhi (60) filed their nominations as Congress and BJP candidates respectively.

In Kangra district, Suman Kumar (27) filed nomination from Indian Political Vikalp Party, in Hamirpur district Naresh Kumar Darji (54) submitted his nomination papers as an independent candidate from Hamirpur seat.

Major (Retd) Khem Singh Thakur (51) filed nomination as an independent candidate from Mandi (Sadar) seat in Mandi district.

In Shimla district, Visher Lal (53) filed his nomination as an independent candidate from the 66-Rampur (SC) seat, while Chander Bhan (56) filed his nomination as an independent from the Sulah seat.

The notification for the state elections was issued on October 17 and the last date for filing nominations is October 25. Scrutiny of papers will be done on October 27 and the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers will be October 29.

Polling will be held on November 12 while counting of votes will take place on December 8.
