Hockey India appoints two new scientific advisors; Analytical Coach for the Women’s Team

With a view to further its historic Tokyo Olympic campaign, Hockey India on Monday announced the appointment of a new analytical coach for the women’s team and scientific advisors for both the senior men’s and women’s teams.

South Africa’s Patrick Shutshani will take over as the analytical coach of the Indian women’s hockey team. He plays Janke Schopmann of the Netherlands, who has been promoted to the position of head coach.

Taren Naidu, who is also a South African, will take over as the scientific advisor to the Indian eve, while Australia’s Mitchell Pemberton will take over as the scientific advisor to the Indian men’s hockey team.

In his previous roles Tsutshani was the Director/Head Coach of the Field Hockey Canada Junior Women’s Team. She coached the Field Hockey Canada junior women’s hockey team that won the 2021 Women’s Pan America Junior Championships. He was also the assistant coach of the Field Hockey Canada women’s national team. In her many international assignments since 2009, Tsutshani has served as an assistant coach for the Hong Kong women’s team. She has also served as the assistant coach and head coach of the South African junior women’s hockey team for the 2016 Junior World Cup and as the assistant coach of the South African junior women’s hockey team for the 2013 Junior World Cup.

With nearly 10 years of experience, Naidu previously served as Head, Hockey Sports Scientist and Strength and Conditioning Specialist for both the South African men’s and women’s hockey teams. She was also the head of the South African women’s team at the Tokyo Olympics, sports scientist and performance analyst.

Pemberton was associated with Hockey Australia as the strength and conditioning coordinator for the junior men’s team. He was also the head of athletic performance and athletic performance coach at the ACT Academy of Sport, and the strength and conditioning coach for the Royal Australian Air Force, a contractor.

“It is wonderful to have Tarren Naidu and Michelle Pemberton as scientific advisors to the Indian women’s hockey team and the Indian men’s hockey team respectively. We are also delighted to have Patrick Tsutshani on board as the analytical coach of the Indian women’s hockey team. We would like to thank the Sports Authority of India for completing the formalities at the earliest so that the new recruits can be inducted into the respective camps at the earliest,” said Hockey India President Gyanandro Ningombam.
