Hosur airport plan gains momentum

The proposal to set up an airport in Hosur is finally gaining some momentum on the ground.

Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited (TIDCO) has invited proposals from consultants for demand assessment, air traffic forecasting and identification of potential sites for setting up the airport.

traffic growth rate

The shortlisted consultant will have to analyze the air traffic growth trends (passenger and cargo) in nearby airports over the last 10 years.

They have to forecast future traffic for 30 years considering the traffic growth rate in the surrounding area and key demand drivers like industrial development, regional economic development, tourism, increase in per capita income etc.

issues to be analyzed

Issues such as identification and evaluation of potential cargo that can be handled economically at the airport and possible diversion of cargo movement to and from other airports will also be assessed by the selected consultant.

A senior government official with knowledge of the developments said, After deciding on the capacity of the airport and the infrastructure to be developed, the extent of the land to be purchased will be decided.

“Based on this and the availability of land, the consultant will identify a suitable location in Hosur for development of the airport and assess the technical and financial feasibility,” the official said.

At present, the state has international airports at Chennai, Coimbatore and Tiruchi and Madurai and two domestic airports at Thoothukudi and Salem.
