She hails from the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh. She completed her graduation and post-graduation from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University.
There can be various motivating factors for an aspirant to crack the UPSC Civil Services Exam in India. IAS Garima Singh never wanted to become a civil service aspirant, rather she wanted to become a doctor. However, an incident during her college life prompted her to become a civil servant in India. She became an IPS officer in her first attempt in 2012. After some years of job, she started her preparation for the IAS post. In 2016, she secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 55 and became an IAS officer in her first attempt. She is currently appointed as District Commissioner ( DC) in the Latehar district of Jharkhand.
Garima Singh hails from the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh. She completed her graduation and post-graduation from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University. During an interview, Garima Singh said that once she was returning home from the mall while studying in college and got late. Meanwhile, at the check post on the way, the police stopped her rickshaw, interrogated her and later asked her to pay a bribe of Rs 100. Garima Singh refused to pay the bribe. Police officials then called her home and told them the situation. After this incident, she became uncomfortable with the attitude of the police in India. Hence, she decided to become IPS to bring the necessary change.
She became an IPS after passing the UPSC exam in the first attempt and worked as a police officer in Uttar Pradesh cadre for three years. But to fulfil the wish of her father Omkar Singh, she again passed the UPSC exam and became an IAS officer. She got Jharkhand cadre. While listing the difference between IAS and IPS, Garima believes that IPS is such a job in which the work profile does not change drastically from SHO to DG level. But as far as IAS is concerned, the avenue of work portfolio in it is very big. She has been in Jharkhand for about 7 years now. During this period, she has also worked in Education, Municipal Corporation and as a Sub-Divisional Officer.
While advising the UPSC aspirants, Garima Singh advises them to focus on self-study. She recommends people quit coaching after one year.
