Hundreds of dead fish found on the banks of Yamuna between Mathura, Agra

Hundreds of dead fish were found on the banks of Yamuna river flowing between Mathura and Agra on Tuesday. The shoal was found near Rambagh Ghat in Agra. The reason for the incident is believed to be the rising level of pollutants and industrial waste being dumped into the river. This is the second such incident this year. According to the report of The Times of India, for the first time such a large number of dead were found near the banks of river Yamuna. The incident was reported by the people who had come to the river bank to graze the fish. Seeing hundreds of dead fish washed ashore, he informed the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB), who launched an investigation into the matter. The water near Rambagh Ghat was thoroughly tested and a report in this regard is expected soon.

“The flow of water in Mathura’s Gokul barrage was stopped for some time. Due to this, the soil dissolved in water would have reduced the amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) required for the survival of aquatic life,” UPPCB regional officer Vishwanath Sharma told Amar Ujala. However, the officials of Gokul Barrage denied the claims.

For aquatic life to survive, the permissible level of DO must be above 4.5 mg/l. However, as per a report by Amar Ujala, it was found that the DO level at Rambagh Ghat dropped to 3mg/l, killing the school of fish and turning ashore.

In addition, it is expected that the addition of treated wastewater causes chlorine levels to go off the charts. This would also have added to the causes of the incident. As per reports, the chlorine level in the Yamuna river near the Taj Mahal is currently around 90,000, crossing the danger mark of over 85,000.
