Police arrested leaders of Osmania University Joint Action Committee (OU JAC) when they staged a dharna in front of the Arts College on the campus.
Alleged that the university authorities refused permission for Rahul’s visit Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government, they demanded that the Congress leader be allowed to visit the campus to interact with the students.
The police arrested the JAC leaders and sent them to the police station. In view of the continuous protests by the student groups, the police have tightened the security on the campus.
A large number of police personnel were deployed in the campus following Sunday’s incident, in which protesters led by NSUI state president Venkata Balamoor barged into the OU administrative building and tried to enter the closed vice chancellor’s office.
They broke the window panes while raising slogans against the Vice-Chancellor and the government, accusing the Vice-Chancellor of acting at the behest of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao.
They were booked for unlawful assembly, assault, rioting, trespassing and preventing public servants from discharging their duties.
On the complaint of a woman police constable, the arrested NSUI leaders were also accused of trying to outrage her modesty.
Venkat Balamoor and 17 others were produced before the magistrate, who remanded them to judicial custody for 14 days.
Congress MP and in-charge of party affairs in Telangana Manickam Tagore has condemned the arrest of NSUI leaders and demanded their immediate release.
Leaders of student groups were also arrested on Sunday when they staged a protest at the minister’s residence in Banjara Hills.
When Congress MLA Jagga Reddy He went to the police station to call the arrested students and threatened to go to the OU campus, he was detained in the police station.
Jagga Reddy had approached the university authorities last week seeking permission for Rahul Gandhi to visit the campus. However, the university refused permission for the same citing its earlier decision not to allow any public meeting on the campus.
Congress leaders, however, claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s visit was not political. He said that he would visit the hostel and mess and interact with the students to know about their problems. He said that he is visiting universities in different parts of the country.
MP Uttam Kumar Reddy announced that Rahul Gandhi would visit the university.
He pulled up the TRS government for refusing to allow the yatra. “When BJP leaders can visit Osmania University and address gatherings and when the birthday KCR And KTR can be celebrated, why can’t our leaders come to the campus. Is this CM KCR’s property?”
He argued that Rahul Gandhi’s visit was not of a political nature as he plans to go around the hostels and mess and interact with the students to know about the problem of unemployment.
state congress president Revanth Reddy Said that since Osmania University played an important role in the first and second phases of the Telangana movement, Rahul Gandhi is keen to interact with the students and visit the campus to gather details.
