Hyderabad: One of the biggest seizures of cocaine in Hyderabad, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials arrested a Tanzanian peddler at Rajiv Gandhi International (RGI) airport and seized 1,157 grams of cocaine worth Rs 11.57 crore.

During interrogation, the passenger confessed that he had consumed capsules containing cocaine. A DRI official said, “This peddler purged 22 cocaine capsules at the airport and sought immediate medical help to purge the rest of the capsules.”
The DRI team immediately admitted him to the nearest hospital. Thereafter, over a period of five days, under medical supervision, the Tanzanian traveler took out 57 more capsules. The DRI team seized all the 79 capsules containing the banned ingredients. Cocaine was in capsule form tightly wrapped with transparent adhesive tape.
The DRI team opened the capsules and seized 1,157 grams of cocaine worth Rs 11.57 crore in the international gray market. The offender was arrested on Tuesday under the NDPS Act, 1985 and remanded to judicial custody.
During investigation, the DRI team came to know that the accused had come to Johannesburg from Tanzania. “From Johannesburg, he was taken to Pretoria by gang members and there he was made to swallow cocaine capsules before flying to Dubai in Johannesburg as part of his trip to India,” a DRI official said.
The peddler was to purify the capsules over a period of three to four days after landing in Hyderabad and hand them over to some unknown person. This is one of the biggest seizures of cocaine in Hyderabad by DRI in recent times.
In 2016, a Delhi-based woman Jyoti Jha was caught by the DRI when she was trying to smuggle 1.99 kg of cocaine by hiding it in aluminum foils of five book covers in her luggage. She was working for a Nigerian friend. In 2019, a local court sentenced Jyoti to 10 years in prison in a cocaine peddling case.
