Hyundai IONIQ 5 wins 2022 German Car of the Year

The Kia EV6 faces stiff competition from the Audi e-tron GT, Peugeot 308 and the Porsche 911 GT3 to take full blown respect. The finalists all won in their respective sub-category.

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 EV has won the 2022 German Car of the Year (GCOTY) title. The award was presented to Hyundai at its European headquarters, Offenbach am Main. The trophy was accepted by Michael Kohl, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Europe and Jurgen Keller, Managing Director, Hyundai Motor Germany. Commenting on the result, Cole said, “In such a competitive environment, winning this award-winning IONIQ 5 shows us that we have a vehicle that is clearly different from our competitors. This win also shows us that Battery electric vehicles are relevant to our European customers. The IONIQ 5 is currently the most important model in our electrification strategy and a driver of our vision of zero-emissions mobility.” The car has been well received by critics and consumers since its launch a few months back. Interestingly, the GCOTY title has been followed by an EV or electric vehicle since its inception four years ago. Jaguar I-Pace in 2019, Porsche Taycan in 2020 and Honda-E in 2021.

The GCOTY prize consists of two rounds of voting, and IONIQ 5 was already the winner of the new energy category award earlier this summer. The other finalists were the Kia EV6 (Premium Car Category Winner), Audi e-tron GT (Luxury Car Category Winner), Peugeot 308 (Compact Car Category Winner), and Porsche 911 GT3 (Performance Car Category Winner).

There were several nominees for each of these sub-categories, which were moderated and judged over the summer. And then in October the GCOTY jury, consisting of 20 members, met once again at the ZF headquarters in Friedrichshafen, to assess the finalists. It was the first time that the jury included international journalists including me representing India, Michael Georgiadis (Greece), Guilherme Costa (Portugal) and Yoshi Kimura (USA/Japan).
