Hyundai Motors America has announced a massive recall campaign involving two of its sedans over a faulty seat belt part that could harm occupants during a crash. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Recall number 22V-354, a total of 2.39 lakh units of the Hyundai sedan are part of the recall, of which only 1% is estimated to be affected.
The recall covers 61,000 units of the Hyundai Xcent manufactured by Kia Motor Mexico for sale in the US between April 22, 2019 and May 22, 2022; Hyundai Motor Manufacturing in Alabama manufactured 1,66,000 units of the Hyundai Elantra from September 12, 2020 to May 22, 2022; Also around 12,000 units of Hyundai Elantra HEV Hybrid manufactured from December 15, 2020 to May 09, 2022.
The issue is the seat belt pretensioner which may have been abnormally positioned during a crash. A specific root cause has yet to be determined, and Hyundai is currently investigating it.
All owners of recalled vehicles will be notified by mail with instructions to take their vehicles to their nearest Hyundai dealer, where a cap will be placed on the micro gas generator and delivery pipe of the seat belt pretensioner to prevent possible abnormal deployment. will be secured with Secure the pretensioner’s micro gas generator to control and assure proper gas deployment,” NHTSA said. It will be done free of charge, of course.
