‘I knew everything is back to normal’: Cheteshwar Pujara credits Ranji Trophy for India return

experienced person India Batsman Cheteshwar Pujara returned to the national team after missing the last couple of Test series. The Indian Test specialist has been going through a patch with India as his last international century came in 2019. After a stellar performance on the South Africa tour, Pujara was dropped from the Indian team along with other Test stalwarts – Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma.

However, Pujara made a comeback with impressive performances in the Ranji Trophy and county cricket. He scored a few fifties in the Ranji Trophy and then moved to the UK to play for Sussex in county cricket. The 34-year-old displayed his brilliance on English soil and scored four centuries, two of which he converted into double centuries.

Pujara said it was important for him to play first-class matches after being dropped from the Indian team.

“The most important thing was to play so many first-class games. I was preparing for it when I was playing back home before joining Sussex,” Pujara said in an interview on BCCI.tv.

The veteran batsman said that playing in the Ranji Trophy helped him get back into the rhythm which was missing in his batting.

“In the three matches I played for Saurashtra in Ranji Trophy, I found my rhythm, I knew I was batting well. It was about getting a big score and so when I did that in my first game, I knew everything was back to normal. (I) was finding my footwork, the rear lift was coming well,” he said.

“After that I just wanted to enjoy my game and contribute to the success of the team. The most important thing is to have a good time on the field. I love this game, enjoy playing cricket, so whenever When I am on the field, I want to try and make the most of it.”


His stellar form in county cricket helped him return to the Indian Test team for the tour of England.

Meanwhile, India are currently leading the Test series 2-1. The fifth Test match, which was scheduled to take place at Old Trafford in Manchester last year, was canceled due to COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Team India will also play a four-day warm-up match for the fifth Test against Leicestershire from June 24 to June 27.
