‘I knew only 2 words in English’: Anil Agarwal calls on students at Oxford Union

New Delhi Vedanta Resources Ltd Chairman Anil Agarwal shares the most realistic advice with students at Oxford Union in London.

Agarwal was invited to speak at the Oxford Union in London. The University of Oxford has been a top educational institution with a legacy of over 900 years, and has produced some of the best world leaders.

There he shared the golden moments of his entrepreneurial journey with the students. Agarwal motivated the students by saying that success and failure are an integral part of life.

Agarwal told that his biggest lesson from his journey is to never stop trying.

Speaking on stage, he said, “Growing up, I only knew two words in English, ‘yes’, and ‘no’. I would use Oxford Dictionary To translate words from Hindi to English, and never had the opportunity to study in a university. Speaking at Oxford Union I had the opportunity to interact with the future leaders of our world, and I sincerely hope that I was able to inspire them with my words because their belief in their aspirations certainly inspired me.

“My journey from a small village in Bihar to the London Stock Exchange has been full of learning, hard work and self-confidence. My advice to the students was simple: be fearless (because luck favors the brave), be humble (Because growth is when you look inwards), and be flexible (because there is no substitute for hard work). The amalgamation of youth and technology will take the world towards a new order,” he insisted.

The President of Vedanta firmly believes that youth are the future and through his talk, he encouraged the youth to work hard and follow the 3 pillar framework – to be fearless, humble and resilient.

Anil Agarwal controls Vedanta Resources through Volcan Investments, a holding vehicle with a 100% stake in the business. Metals and mining magnate Anil Agarwal converted the scrap metal business into London-headquartered Vedanta Resources. At present, his net worth is $260 million.

According to ForbesAgarwal has created a $10 billion fund in partnership with London-based firm Centricus to invest in privatized Indian public sector companies.

Agarwal was recently in the news for making it to the list of UK’s richest in 2022, sharing the stage with Gopi Hinduja, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw and Lakshmi Niwas Mittal. Anil Agarwal is ranked 16th with a net worth of £9.2 billion.

Agarwal has pledged to give 75% of his wealth to charity and social good.

The statement said he recently joined The Giving Pledge, a movement of global philanthropists who commit to giving the majority of their wealth to charity or charitable causes.
