Namakkal (Tamil Nadu):

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President MK Stalin while addressing a party meeting of representatives of urban local bodies in Namakkal on Sunday said, “I will become a dictator and I will take action if indiscipline and irregularities go to their heads.” “

Describing local bodies as the lifeline of democracy, Stalin said icons of social justice Periyar EV Ramasamy and Rajaji started their public life as heads of local bodies in Erode and Salem respectively.

Pointing to the many newly elected female representatives, he advised them to act independently and not to surrender the responsibility given to them to their spouses. He said that the elected representatives of local bodies should follow the principles of law, fairness and justice and should serve the people.

“I warn that action will be taken against those who violate it. Legal action will be taken, not just on the part of the party,” he said.

Stalin said many of his close friends have been telling him that he has become ‘too much’ democratic and added, “If indiscipline and irregularities go to his head, I will become a dictator and take action.”

The top DMK leader said that the party did not capture power so easily and it is the result of selfless work of crores of party workers and similarly, he became the Chief Minister after his hard work for the people for the last five decades.

Recalling his imprisonment during the infamous Emergency during 1975-77 and becoming an MLA in 1989 itself, he said that the workers should work hard for the people and wait for the responsibilities to come.

It is difficult to earn the goodwill of the people, he said and added that he has been working among the people for the last 50 years. He said that when the representatives of the local bodies worked after understanding the needs of the people, the people would be following them.

“At the same time, if you make mistakes, they will turn away from you. Don’t forget that they will boycott you.” The DMK chief said the basic objective of the conference is to send a message that there should be no allegations against the elected representatives, be it mayor or councillor.
