IAF officer arrested on complaint of alleged sexual assault in Coimbatore

The police have said that the question of jurisdiction is being discussed (Representational)

Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu:

A 26-year-old flight lieutenant in the Indian Air Force has been arrested by the police in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu following a complaint of sexual harassment by a 29-year-old female officer.

She said she was forced to approach the police as she was not satisfied with the action taken by the IAF following her original complaint about two weeks ago. Her sister also told NDTV that she (female officer) had fought under cover to make her complaint “victim-shaming” and “withdraw the complaint”.

The woman, who had come to the Air Force College from Bidar in Karnataka for training, said the attack took place inside her room at the Air Force Administrative College in Redfield, Coimbatore.

According to his statement, he injured himself while playing a game. Then he took some medicines before sleeping in his room. Later when she woke up it was found that she had been sexually assaulted.

Police said they took action only after they were told that the women officers were unhappy with the IAF’s behavior on their complaint.

A women’s team from the city’s Gandhipuram police station conducted a preliminary investigation.

The arrested officer, who is a native of Chhattisgarh, has been sent to Udumalapet jail.

He surrendered before the District Judge.

However, a lawyer representing the accused has pointed out that the police do not have jurisdiction in matters relating to the Armed Forces personnel.

The lawyer said that such cases can be heard only by the defense court.
