ICC T20 World Cup | Moeen beat England to NZ. Driven to 166/4 against

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson made changes in the bowling.

All-rounder Moeen Ali smashed an unbeaten 37-ball 51 to take England to 166 for four in the first semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup here on Wednesday.

Sent in to bat, Moeen and David Malan (42 off 30 balls) were England’s main contributors to Willow in the epic 2019 ODI World Cup final rematch.

Moin hit three fours and two sixes, while Malan hit four fours and a six.

After three relatively quiet overs, opener Jos Buttler (29) hit Trent Boult for two consecutive fours – one straight down the ground and then the batsman reached a wide delivery to play it through cover.

Boult then hits one too short and the ball goes past Buttler as well as wicketkeeper Devon Conway for another boundary and wide for an extra run.

Promoted to the top order in the absence of injured Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow (13) played his first attacking shot straight over the bowler’s head for a boundary as England reached 37 for no loss in five overs.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson effected a bowling change and the move immediately paid dividends as the captain himself signaled the end of Bairstow’s middle by pulling a fine diving catch at mid-off off Adam Milne’s first ball.

That over from Milne not only gave the Kiwis their first breakthrough, but it also halted the flow of runs as England ended the power play at 40 for one.

Leg-spinner Ish Sodhi began his spell for five runs before Buttler, one not letting the Kiwis take control of the proceedings, used a reverse sweep to get a boundary against left-armer Mitchell Santner.

Sodhi got the huge wicket of Butler, who again went for a reverse sweep, but failed on that occasion as the ball hit him on the pads. David Malan ends the over on a good note, inside-out to pick himself up for a boundary.

James Neesham induced an edge with Malan’s blade, but Conway could not reach the ball, and after three balls, the batsman fired the medium pacer for a boundary.

England scored 11 runs and scored 11 runs with the help of Malan’s two fours off Glenn Phillips.

Southee got the big wicket of an ominous looking Malan just as he was about to loose.

After Malan was dismissed, it was on Moeen to push England forward and the all-rounder did what was asked of him with his scintillating hit.

Liam Livingstone scored 17 runs in 10 balls.
