‘If BJP was the only party left…’: Shashi Tharoor loyalist hits back at Assam CM

Shashi Tharoor’s close aide and Congress leader Salman Anees Soz has hit back at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, saying that 1,072 Congress delegates who voted for Tharoor in the presidential election will soon join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Taking to Twitter, Soz responded to Sarma’s comments, “I was one of the 1072 delegates who voted for @ShashiTharoor in the @INCIndia elections. We lost but internal party democracy won. If BJP is the only party left If I had, I wouldn’t have been involved.” There are too many bigots, cowards and opportunists in this for my taste. @himantabiswa

The Chief Minister of Assam targeted the Congress over the presidential election, questioning how the victory of Mallikarjun Kharge in the Congress presidential election can be considered a sign of internal democracy in the party. Speaking at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit (HTLS), Sarma said, “If Shashi Tharoor had won, I would have said that democracy has arrived in the Congress.”

Responding to a question about Shashi Tharoor getting a lot of votes in the Congress Presidential election, Sarma said, “There are many good people in Congress and I am sure they will soon join BJP. Voted for Shashi Tharoor.” I think these will be the people who will join BJP after 6 months or 1 year.”

On the issue of pressure on BJP to conduct elections, Sarma said, “Our party has to conduct elections, I don’t know who will be my next president because he (JP Nadda) is but any BJP president will be BJP president.” A democratic process has to go through and I am sure he will not be remote controlled and he will not be a face that can be ignored. He will always be a solid person, he will be selected through consultations and he will not be the son of a leader of any major political leader”

before, Shashi Tharoor Sarma had dismissed the claims saying that “those who show courage will never join the BJP. It is those who do not have the courage to fight who may be tempted to do so”.
