‘If the cost of roads is ₹335.17 crore, why is the maintenance cost ₹785.31 crore?

KRDCL asked to re-tender the work of improvement and maintenance of 12 High Traffic Density Corridors in Bengaluru

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the Karnataka State Road Development Corporation (KRDCL) has been directed to re-tender the work of improvement and maintenance of 12 high-traffic-density corridors in Bengaluru.

Responding to a question by Congress member PR Ramesh in the Legislative Council on December 23, the Chief Minister said that the government noticed several lapses during the review of tenders which were finalised. While the cost of development of the roads is ₹335.17 crore, the cost of their maintenance for five years was estimated at ₹785.31 crore.

“Why would such an amount be required for maintenance? White-topped roads rarely require maintenance. In addition, a blacklisted contractor was also finalized for a project. Keeping these issues in mind, the government has directed the corporation to re-tender,” he explained.

The government has identified 12 roads, with a total length of 191 km, as high-traffic-density corridors. They are Ballari Road, Old Madras Road, Old Airport Road, Four Parts of Outer Ring Road, Sarjapura Road, Hosur Road, Bannerghatta Road, Kanakapura Road, Magadi Road, Tumakuru Road, West of Chord Road.

Demo stretches will be made on Old Airport Road and Magadi Road. The CM said that Rs 4.65 crore is expected to be spent on the improvement of Old Airport Road and Rs 4.70 crore for Magadi Road.

The roads were chosen considering the traffic density, and they were all parts connecting the state capital to different parts of Karnataka.
