Samten Yongcha Gompa, Arunachal Pradesh

Not for everyone, this Buddhist temple is located in the forest of Arunachal Pradesh, the northeastern state of India. Believed to be nearly four hundred years old, the imposing wooden Samten Yongcha Gompa is situated on top of a soaring hill, six kilometers west of Mechuka town. The first thing you notice when you reach the temple is the forest with prayer flags and beautiful views of the surrounding valley, river and mountains. According to Lonely Planet, the caretakers at the temple will be seen showing you around the two-story temple with their colorful imagery, including some of the guardian deities of the local people.

Roop Kund, Uttarakhand

The view at Roop Kund may be reminiscent of some episodes of Game of Thrones, as the snow-capped hills reveal a lake called “The Mystery Lake”. The name comes from the fact that the features of Roop Kund are human skeletons and remains of horses belonging to the Paleolithic Age. To reach this place, one has to be prepared to take a trek starting from Lohajung, a small pass sitting at an altitude of 16,499 feet above sea level in the Garhwal Himalayas.

Chorten Forest, Sikkim

This forest is located at the southern end of the Tashiding Gompa complex in Sikkim. The unusual complex includes a 2008 Dharma bell, two giant Kashmir cypress trees and a series of large Tibetan stupas. The view is a visual treat for those seeking calm and quiet and want to breathe some forest air.

Edakkal Caves, Kerala

Situated in the Wayanad district, the Edakkal Caves are remote mountain caves, or more accurately, a small chain of caves. The caves are famous for the ancient collection of petroglyphs in their top chamber, which are estimated to be over 3000 years old.
