IIMs may revise admission process after change in CAT 2021 eligibility criteria – Times of India

Following the revision in the eligibility criteria for writing the Common Admission Test (CAT), 2021, some IIMs, including IIM Udaipur, are planning to slightly tweak their admission policy to ensure a level playing field for all candidates.

revised norms

Considering the difficulties being faced by some of the candidates, the CAT committee on 18th August announced some extraordinary changes in the eligibility criteria for CAT 2021.

As per the revised criteria, candidates having ‘Promotion/Pass’ instead of ‘Award of Marks’ certificate in any one of the last two years of graduation program can enter ‘Promotion or Pass’ option in the application form. This will allow the candidate to complete and submit the application form irrespective of the requirements of minimum eligibility criteria of 45% and 50% or equivalent CGPA for reserved and general category candidates respectively.

The decisions taken by the CAT committee, says the IIM Udaipur admission official, are aimed at addressing the difficulties faced by students who passed or finished their bachelor’s degree in 2020 and 2021. “However, post amendments to the CAT 2021 eligibility criteria, each IIM should mold its admission policy,” says the IIM Udaipur admission official.

The reason why the admission policy should be changed is that the IIM Udaipur admissions authority is giving weightage to the candidate’s academic performance in class X, XII and graduation, while preparing the final qualification. “In the absence of marks obtained by a candidate, it will be difficult for us to ensure parity among candidates without marks,” he says.

“In order to formulate a new admission policy for better parity between candidates with award of marks and promotion or pass certificates, IIM Udaipur needs at least a month or two to come to a conclusion.”

current policy

At present, IIM Udaipur prepares the final merit list on the basis of CAT score (60%), personal appearance (15%) and profile (25%). Under the 25% component, the institute gives 9% weightage to academic profile, followed by work experience and diversity at 9% and 7% respectively.

For academic profile, the maximum weightage is as follows – 2% for class X, 2% and 4% for class XII and graduation respectively. Also, 1% component for CA/CS/ICWA has been completed.

no effect on admission

Despite minor changes in CAT eligibility, Vinita Sahai, Director, IIM Bodh Gaya says that the latest change will not have a significant impact on admissions for the 2022 batch.

“From our understanding, no institute has given pass or promoted certificate to the students instead of the marks obtained. Whatever the formula is adopted, we fully respect the marks awarded by the university or institute. IIM Bodh Gaya will continue to follow the same admission process,” says Sahai.
