New Delhi: Indian technical institutions have topped two global employability rankings this year. Ranked in the 101-110 bracket in the QS Graduate Employability Rankings for the first time, after Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. released September, IIT Delhi is ranked 27th in the Times Higher Education Global Employability Ranking.

The list released on Wednesday shows that IIT Delhi graduates are among the most employable in the world. Even as it maintained its position as last year, it beat stalwarts like the University of California Berkeley (32) and the University of Chicago (33).

Other institutions that made it to the top 100 are the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru (61) and IIT Bombay (97). Both these institutes have improved from their last year’s rank of 71 and 128 respectively.

Talking about the specialty of IIT Delhi among the top 50 institutes in the employability ranking, Director, IIT-D, V. Ramgopal Rao said that it is because of the exhaustive nature of studying in IITs that students rank so high in terms of their employability factor.

IIT Delhi, Bombay Improve Ranking

The statement said that the results show that Employers are looking for graduates with strong digital literacy and subject expertise skills, rather than focusing on university reputation.

It states that “there are many countries that are rising stars when it comes to employment. Mainland China, France, India and Spain are among the countries and regions that are emerging while the United Kingdom (UK), US, India and Israel stand out for their digital performance.

IIT Delhi and Bombay have also made it to the top 150 institutes in the QS rankings. Both the institutes have improved their ranking as compared to last year. While IIT Bombay moved up from its last year’s rank bracket (110-120) to the 101-110 band, IIT-Delhi improved from its last year’s band of 151-160 to 131-140 this year. IIT-Madras also improved its score from last year (band 171-180) to 151-160 this year.

Commenting on the better ranking of Indian institutions, another IIT professor, who did not wish to be quoted, said, “Apart from the performance and academic rigor of the students, the second reason for the improvement in the ranking of Indian institutions is that the emphasis on institutions are given. Paying on that now. There is a lot of awareness about rankings and the government is also looking into it… Their Institute of Eminence scheme is based on rankings, so it is gaining momentum.”
