IIT Delhi launches STEM mentorship program for schoolgirls

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi Started STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) counseling program for schoolgirls. This was done with an aim to encourage girls to choose science as their career and is designed for the girl students of class 11. They will be trained to think creatively about science and innovation, to provide them with experience in solving research problems and to build a strong knowledge foundation.

10 girl students from the Science stream will be selected who will go through a three-stage programme, consisting of a two-week winter project, an online lecture series starting in late December 2021 and beginning January 2022. Consisting of modules and a summer project in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, etc.

During the period between February and April 2022, lectures will be delivered by professors from IIT Delhi. There will also be a summer project for three to four weeks in May-June 2022, where students gain hands-on experience in laboratories, and finalize their project reports with their mentors.

Ten students from different Kendriya Vidyalayas of Delhi region will be selected in the first batch. IIT Delhi said, “In future, there are plans to involve students from other regions of the country and convert the program to residential.”

Schools can reach out to the Associate Dean, Academic Outreach, and the new initiative, IIT Delhi, to enroll their girl students for the mentorship programme.

Under this initiative, each schoolgirl will be mentored by an IIT Delhi faculty along with her research scholars. During the consultation period, they will be exposed to fundamental concepts in STEM subjects, and will also learn practical methods and techniques used in science laboratories.

“The program will give some much needed traction to the girl students to get into the field of science and technology in future. We believe that students should be exposed to scientific concepts at an early age, to be able to appreciate the rigors of academic research, and have the confidence to take up academics as a career option when they grow up should be created”, said Prof Pritha Chandra, Associate Dean, Academic Outreach and New Initiatives, IIT Delhi.
