IIT Delhi to set up office of diversity and inclusion, create new dean’s post

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi A new dean for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion has been created. As per the proposal of the IIT Delhi board, the institute will set up an office that will be headed by a new dean. This step has been taken to create a more inclusive environment in the campus.

“Through this we seek to celebrate the diversity existing on campus, document its benefits to the community and create a more inclusive environment for all,” reads the official notice by Director Professor V Ramgopal.

The new office will work on gender, sexuality, race, language, disability and mental health to promote greater inclusion. The notice also said that at present most of the work is being done at the institute, which includes Initiative for Gender Equality and Sensitization (IGES) and Office of Accessible Education (OAE). The new office will consolidate the ongoing activities and sensitize the campus community to the needs of the campus.

The work is significant because “our Constitution is, above all, an essay in acceptance of diversity. It is founded on a vision of an inclusive society that accommodates multiple ways of life,” the notice added.

The Director also said that the counseling services of the Institute have been extended to all the members and it is not only for the students. “The number of members of the IIT Delhi community is increasing, indicating a positive change in health-seeking behavior for mental health issues,” he said. The dean of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion is expected to provide visibility, leadership, and coherence and to ensure that work is done in a more sustained manner, the official notice added.
