IIT Hyderabad and this Indian startup made the first indigenous 5G tech

To boost India’s 5G capabilities, IIT Hyderabad (IITH) and WiSig Networks have indigenously developed 5G wireless broadband technology for the first time.

IITH and WiSig Networks have jointly announced the first 5G data call using indigenously developed 5G ORAN technology. The call was made using a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) capable base station that supports 100MHz of bandwidth in the 3.3-3.5 GHz frequency band.

WiSig announces a range of ORN compliant 5G infra solutions including small cell, large-scale MIMO Macro Cell Distribution Unit (DU) option 7.2x, Integrated Access Backhaul (IAB) unit that supports mm-wave and sub 6 GHz frequency bands supports. These solutions and products are available on a license basis to Indian wireless equipment manufacturers,” said Dr Sai Dheeraj, WiSig Principal Scientist.

Based at IIT Research Park, WiSig Networks Private Limited is a growing Indian startup focused on developing 5G mobile communication products and solutions. IITH and WiSig have developed more than 100 5G patents and 15 of which have been declared as 3GPP 5G Standard Required Patents (SEPS) to TSDSI (Telecom Standards Development Society, India).

“This is a pivotal moment in indigenous 5G development. IIT Hyderabad and WiSig Networks have indigenously developed 5G wireless broadband technology for the first time, putting India at the forefront of 5G and beyond. Armed with these capabilities, India can become self-reliant in the design and manufacture of wireless broadband devices and play an increasingly important role in future generation technologies, products and services,” said Professor Kiran Kuchi, Dean (R&D), IITH he said.

Professor BS Murthy, Director, IITH, thanked the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for the support that led to the development of world-class 5G technologies at IITH.

“Our mantra is to invent and innovate in Technology for Humanity (IITH), and we expect WiSig to make India “self-reliant” in the 5G space, Murthy said.
