The Madras High Court on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail to two professors attached to the Indian Institute of Technology (Madras), who feared arrest in connection with the rape and sexual assault of a research student. Justice G Jayachandran granted the relief with the condition that he would not leave Tamil Nadu without taking the permission of the court without the concurrence of the CB-CID and the country.

They were named as the fifth and seventh accused in the case, according to Professors G Edmana Prasad and Ramesh L Gardas. The other accused named in the FIR were students of the Department of Chemistry. The victim had earlier lodged a complaint with the IIT management against the two accused. But the management did not find any solid evidence.

However, to give moral peace to the victim, the institute allowed her to complete her research without interference from any of the accused and directed the accused students to stay off the campus and complete their studies by becoming day scholars. He was also directed not to have any conversation with the complainant.

Further, the petitioners claimed that their names never came up in the internal investigation by the institute. But surprisingly, their names were included in the FIR as accused.
