IIT Madras becomes a COVID cluster; college campus remains open

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has become a Covid-19 cluster as over 170 students have tested positive till date. According to Tamil Nadu Health Secretary Dr J Radhakrishnan, the college campus is still open. The officials have advised people not to panic as the institute is conducting tests.

A total of 171 Covid cases have been reported from IIT Madras so far, informed Radhakrishnan on Thursday. “Some more cases have come to the fore IIT Madras, These are all part of our saturation test. There is nothing to panic. We have not closed the institute. We are ensuring that the cluster does not spread to other places.”

Meanwhile, IIT Madras has asked people to get themselves tested if they experience any symptoms. The institute has advised everyone to wear a mask, maintain social distance and practice all COVID-19 security protocol. Earlier on Wednesday, according to the Tamil Nadu Health Department, there were 111 Covid-19 positive cases on the campus of IIT Madras.

Separately, Tamil Nadu reported 77 new Covid cases, taking the total caseload to 34,53,756. The death toll remained unchanged at 38,025 with zero fatalities being recorded in the last 24 hours. According to the state health bulletin, with 34 more people being discharged in the last 24 hours, the number of cured people rose to 34,15,284, leaving 447 active infections.
