A postgraduate student of the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) pursuing MS in Electrical Engineering was found dead in his hostel room. The Kotturpuram police have registered a case suspecting suicide and are investigating. However, no suicide note has been recovered so far.

A police officer from the Chennai City Police said the student was a native of Maharashtra. He lived in a single room in the Mahanadi hostel on the IIT-M campus. Police said he did not come out of his room on Monday. Hence, other students informed the warden and security personnel, who barged in and found him dead in his room. The Police is investigating.

“IIT-M informs of the sad and untimely demise of a second year MS Research Scholar, Department of Electrical Engineering, on Monday,” the institute said in a statement on Tuesday evening. The institute “expresses its deepest condolences and stands united in grief with the friends and family of the deceased student.”

The institute strives to improve and maintain the well-being of the students/scholars, faculty and staff on campus by constantly evaluating various support systems, the statement said. Officials said the student’s parents had reached out to the city and it “requests everyone to respect the family’s privacy at this unfortunate moment.”
