IIT Madras students launch campaign to spread awareness on menstrual hygiene, gender inequality, sexual harassment

student of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras Launched a social campaign called ‘Unmute’ focused on menstrual hygiene management, self-defense against gender inequality and sexual harassment. Through this initiative, the students aim to help women speak up on these issues and conduct awareness campaigns.

As part of Shastra 2022, the annual technical fest of IIT Madras, students partnered with NGOs such as Chudar, Go-Hygiene, Cry, Sakhya and Swayam to conduct events such as pad distribution drives, online sessions in Bengaluru is of. Gender inequality, and impact on people’s lives, Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) awareness session for school going girls in Chennai from 16 October.

“Every year, the Shastra team tries to identify a social issue and take initiatives to tackle it. This year under Shastra 2022, students have launched ‘Unmute’ campaign. The ‘Unmute’ campaign was virtually launched on October 24 in the presence of actor Ehsaas Channa,” IIT Madras said.

This year two events will be organized. MHM awareness session where speakers will talk about menstrual hygiene in online/offline mode. They will speak about the need for menstrual hygiene, how a lack of it can lead to diseases, and teach how to maintain menstrual hygiene. Finally, menstrual pads will be distributed to women.

Another phenomenon is the self-defense program which seeks to find out why women are still sexually harassed, empowering women and enabling them to defend themselves by identifying dangerous situations and employing simple techniques. . The students themselves are planning to conduct some sessions as speakers.

Speaking about this initiative, Nitish Gupta, Co-Curricular Affairs Secretary, Shastra 2022, IIT Madras said, “We believe that along with helping women, some basic self-defense techniques should be taught to women. These incidents can be reduced by being informed and, even men, understand how to assess a situation so that they can help people, even when they are not being attacked. As a part of our event, speakers are approached by various organizations on why women are still sexually harassed, empowering women to understand inequalities in society, and by identifying dangerous situations. and employing simple techniques to enable them to defend themselves.”
