It was a brilliant batting performance from the 28-year-old England batsman who led the run chase after Dubai Capitals posted a challenging 177 for 4 in 20 overs.

For Dubai Capitals, opener Joe Root scored an unbeaten 80 off 54 balls with the help of eight fours and a six, while captain Rovman Powell scored 44 off 27 balls with the help of five fours and a six. Unfortunately, his effort went in vain before Kohler Cadmore’s fastest century of the tournament. Kohler Cadmore also scored 55 in their previous match against MI Emirates, but his effort went in vain as Sharjah lost that match by six wickets.

It was Kohler-Cadmore’s day on Saturday after Sharjah Warriors won the toss and elected to bowl. Dubai opener Robin Uthappa dropped a wide delivery from Naveen Ul Haq on the fifth ball of the second over to Noor Ahmed at deep point for a straight 3.

Daniel Lawrence, along with opener Joe Root, started recovering the team from the initial setbacks. Root hit Naveen-ul-Haq for two fours and a six in the fifth over. Dubai completed 50 runs in 6.2 overs. UAE left-arm fast bowler Muhammad Jawadullah, playing his first match, conceded only six runs in the seventh over. Left-arm chinaman bowler Noor Ahmed also bowled tight and conceded only five runs in the eighth over. Jawdallah’s ninth over also yielded only four runs. At the halfway point, Dubai Capitals were 70 for 2, with Root scoring most of the runs.

Lawrence showed the first signs of aggression in the 11th over, hitting Jawadullah for a six and two fours over deep mid-wicket. Eighteen runs came from that over. Root completed his half-century in 35 balls. Naveen-ul-Haq had Lawrence caught at long-on by Tom Kohler-Cadmore for 34 in the 13th over. Lawrence and Root added 82 runs in 59 balls for the third wicket. Root continued to strike brilliantly and, along with his captain Rovman Powell, strengthened the score to 122 for 3 in 15 overs.

Powell, thanks to some poor fielding, escaped being caught, and saw his team cross the 150 mark in 17.5 overs. However, he was caught and bowled by Woakes for 44 on the fifth ball of the last over. He added 74 runs in 45 balls for the fourth wicket. Yusuf Pathan hit the last ball for a six over deep fine leg to ensure a total of 177 for 4 in 20 overs. Joe Root remained unbeaten after scoring 80 runs.

A drop Dawid Malan started off by hitting Raja for two consecutive fours. Kohler-Camdor hit Mujeeb for four fours and two sixes in the sixth over and collected 29 runs from the over. Sharjah’s hopes were dashed by scoring 95 runs in the powerplay. Although Chamika Karunaratne forced Malan to play on his wicket for 9 runs, Sharjah needed to score 83 runs to win the match. Moeen Ali joined Kohler-Cadmore as the score went past 100 in seven overs. Powell bowled the eighth over and conceded only seven runs. Akif Raja strikes again to get Moeen caught by Fabian Allen for 15 at deep square leg.
