IMD has issued an orange alert for six districts of Kerala. latest forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued an orange alert for six districts of Kerala – Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod – for today. It has also issued a yellow alert for the rest of the districts of the southern state, which have been witnessing a steep fall for the past few days.

Orange Alert indicates very heavy rain with between 6 cm to 20 cm of rain. A yellow alert indicates heavy rain between 6 and 11 cm, while a red alert is issued when there is a possibility of more than 20 cm of rain in 24 hours.

Heavy rains are continuing in some parts of the state, with Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Kottayam districts being the worst affected. Kollam, Kottayam, Thiruvananthapuram, Idukki and Thrissur districts have been the most affected in the last 24 hours.

Kerala has received 833.8 mm of rainfall during the period from October 1 to 15 as against the normal average rainfall of 407.2 mm. There is a departure of 105%.

Pathanamthitta district received 194% excess rainfall during this period, followed by Kannur, Kasaragod, Kozhikode districts with 127, 116 and 111% excess rainfall.

The eastern part of Kollam district received heavy rains on Sunday and the weather station at Punalur recorded 11.7 cm of rain in the last 24 hours.

This resulted in swelling of the major rivers and streams in the region, affecting the areas of Pathanamthitta and Kollam districts on the west side downstream.

Several universities in the state have postponed examinations scheduled for Monday and Tuesday due to incessant rains, while the collectors of seven south central districts have declared Monday a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges.
