IMD predicts widespread rain from Thursday

Heavy rain may occur in South Tamil Nadu today

Due to the presence of a cyclonic circulation extending up to the state coast, parts of South Tamil Nadu may receive heavy rains on Tuesday. As this system is now moving closer to the Bay of Bengal, the intensity of rain is expected to increase in the state from Thursday.

Heavy rains lashed several parts of Chennai since the early hours of Monday. it led to Water logging In areas like T. Nagar which were returning to normalcy after heavy rains in early November.

However, several automated weather stations and rain gauges in the city including MRC Nagar, Taramani, MGR Nagar, West Tambaram, Avadi, Nungambakkam and Anna University recorded only 2-3 cm of rain till 8.30 am on Monday. Light rain continued in the city during the day as well.

According to the bulletin of the Meteorological Department at 8.30 pm, a Cyclonic Circulation is persisting over South-East Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over southwest Bay of Bengal during next 48 hours. It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross Sri Lanka and South Tamil Nadu. A trough extends from the cyclonic circulation up to Tamil Nadu Coast.

It will maintain wet weather and bring very widespread and moderate rainfall to the state till Friday. Officials said the same system pushed the clouds towards the city along with thunderstorms and started heavy rain that lasted for a few hours on Monday.

The IMD has issued an orange alert for some parts of the state from Thursday as heavy to very heavy rains are likely to lash the coastal districts of Puducherry and Karaikal.

Officials said the prevailing weather system is likely to bring thunderstorms with heavy rain at isolated places over Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Madurai and Ramanathapuram districts on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Chennai will also receive rain after Thursday. But its intensity will be evident only when the weather system comes closer. Thunderstorms are common during the northeast monsoon,” said N. Puviarasan, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Chennai said.

Heavy rains this month have brought enough water to the state’s reservoirs. Out of 14,138 tanks, around 6,822 have touched 100% capacity on Monday. According to the Water Resources Department, the 90 reservoirs of Tamil Nadu have a total storage of 206.12 thousand million cubic feet of water, which is about 92% of their capacity.

Incessant rains have affected the prices of vegetables, which have been rising steadily.
