Islamabad: Supporters of Pakistanformer prime minister of Imran Khan protested outside on Tuesday election Commission Offices across the country, demand for resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on his alleged biased conduct.
Sikandar Sultan Raja, a former senior bureaucrat, was appointed as the head of the Election Commission (ECP) of Pakistan by the previous Imran Khan government, but now the former prime minister has turned against him and blamed his rival political parties. Allegations of being “biased” – the allegation dismissed by the CEC
Party workers of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) demonstrated outside Election Commission offices in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Gujarat and Faisalabad among other cities.
The main rally was held outside the ECP headquarters in Islamabad, with protesters raising slogans against the CEC and demanding his resignation.
PTI leader Shibli Faraz said, “Our workers are holding a symbolic protest outside the ECP office in the capital, but thousands of party members could not reach the protest site as the roads have been blocked.”
former home minister sheikh rashid He said that even if “the government and the entire establishment come together, they cannot prevent elections from being held”. Meanwhile, tight security measures were put in place in the capital to prevent protesters from entering the Red Zone, which houses several state buildings, including those of the ECP.
In Lahore, a large contingent of police was deployed outside the ECP office and civilians were barred from entering the building. Protests and sloganeering were also held outside the ECP office in Peshawar. They also tried to forcefully enter the building but were stopped.
PTI had announced on Sunday that it would hold protests outside the ECP offices, alleging that the CEC was biased against the party.
The demonstrations were clearly part of a strategy to put pressure on CEC Raja as he neared the conclusion of the foreign funding case against PTI. Several experts are of the view that the party has failed to convince the ECP about the legality of the money deposited in some of its bank accounts during the hearing of the case.
Khan was ousted earlier this month through a no-confidence vote, which he alleged was conspired by the US through a conspiracy to topple his government to pursue an independent foreign policy . The US has rejected the claims several times.
