In a letter to the Governor, Jharkhand’s ruling coalition called Raj Bhavan a ‘selective leak’, creating chaos

Senior leaders and MLAs of the ruling UPA alliance in Jharkhand on Thursday told Governor Ramesh Bais that “leaks” from the Raj Bhavan are “creating political instability” amid uncertainty over the leadership of Chief Minister Hemant Soren. The leaders also complained about alleged attempts by the BJP to buy out legislators of the ruling coalition, as well as asking the governor to “clear the air”. Election View of the Commission on the disqualification of Soren as an MLA.

A 10-member delegation of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) met Bais and submitted a memorandum amid escalating political crisis in the state. In the letter, he expressed his grief over the “selective leak” from the Raj Bhavan over the possible disqualification of the chief minister. The delegation said such leaks led to chaos, confusion and uncertainty.

“The alleged selective leaks from the office of Her Majesty are creating a state of chaos, confusion and uncertainty which spoils the administration and governance of the State. It is intended to destabilize the democratically elected government led by Hemant Soren by illegal means. Also encourages political bigotry,” the letter read.

The leaders also asked the Governor to clear the confusion over the Election Commission’s decision on the matter. The delegation said speculation about Soren’s fate has encouraged destabilization of the democratically elected government.

The meeting with the governor was held in the wake of reports that Soren would resign as an MLA. The delegation told Bais that news of the chief minister’s possible disqualification as an MLA was being “sensationalised in the local and national media”.

Soren was not part of the delegation meeting Bais as he was holding a cabinet meeting in state capital Ranchi. A day after the death of a minor girl in Jharkhand’s Dumka sparked national outrage, the ruling coalition sent 32 MLAs to Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh to stop alleged poaching attempts by the BJP.

However, the ruling coalition insisted that the disqualification of the CM as an MLA would not affect the government, as it enjoys an absolute majority in the 81-member assembly.

The BJP had filed a petition seeking disqualification of Soren from the Assembly in an office of profit case relating to a mining lease. The Election Commission sent its decision on the matter to Bais on August 25, and it is yet to be made official. However, there is buzz that the Election Commission had recommended the disqualification of the CM as an MLA. The Raj Bhavan has not officially announced anything on the matter since then.
