In a meeting with Meghalaya Chief Minister Amit Shah, the demand of Malchapara residents will be raised

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has said that he will take up the demand of the people of Malchapara, who are demanding a merger with the state instead of Assam, during his meeting with the Union Home Ministry later this month.

The tentative date of the meeting is March 27.

Speaking to reporters, Sangma said, “We have been told tentatively, I am waiting for a formal invitation from the Home Ministry.”

Asked about the demand of the residents of Malchapara to be a part of Meghalaya, the chief minister said, “I can bring it up in the meeting, I will discuss it but it is difficult for me to say right now how it will go.”

He pointed out that the public opinion in the areas of dispute was taken by the representatives of both the states.

“The public hearing was held at various places where representatives of both the states were present. When those meetings were held in Malchapara, most people expressed their apprehension of joining Assam. I will definitely take up the issue,” Sangma said.

Residents of Malchapara, which is one of the villages recommended to go to Assam as per the latest report on the Inter-State Boundary Issue (Phase 1), demanded a review of the report and inclusion of their villages under Meghalaya.

The Chief Minister said that both the governments have unanimously decided that no new areas will be added beyond the existing 12 areas of difference. He said that out of the 36 villages that Meghalaya had claimed in 2011, the state would get 30 villages (wholly or partly) under its purview.

In which all 8 villages of Tarabari, 2 out of 3 villages of Gezam, 11 out of 12 villages of Hahim, 2 out of 2 villages of Boklapara, 1 out of 6 villages of Pillingkata and 3 out of 5 villages of Ratachera, Meghalaya Are included. of Assam on the Meghalaya border

After the all-party meeting, a delegation may submit a report to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is also likely to be present in the meeting.

Both the states have been embroiled in a border dispute for the past several years.
