Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday campaigned for his counterpart Pushkar Singh Dhami for the May 31 bypolls, saying it was an opportunity to lead from the front in Uttarakhand’s development journey. Although the BJP registered a major victory in the Uttarakhand assembly elections in February, Dhami lost from the Khatima seat. However, the party named him chief minister, requiring his election as an MLA within six months to continue in the post.

BJP’s Kailash Gahtori, who won from Champawat constituency, vacated his seat to make way for Dhami. “For the first time since the formation of the district in 1997, Champawat has got a chance to elect a chief minister and not an MLA. You should not waste this opportunity. I appeal to you to vote heavily in favor of youth leadership of Pushkar Singh Dhami for the speedy development of the area.

“It is the good fortune of Champawat that the chief minister’s election is in his hands. This is an opportunity for Champawat to lead the way forward in the development journey of Uttarakhand. Adityanath lauded the vacating of Gahtori’s seat, saying it showed his farsightedness.

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said, “Under the young and energetic leadership of Dhami, all the aspirations of the state with respect to employment generation and tourism development are going to be fulfilled.” Ghatori and state BJP president Madan Kaushik also joined Dhami and Adityanath in the roadshow in Tanakpur.

In the assembly elections in February, the BJP won 47 of the total 70 assembly seats, but lost to Dhami Khatima – a seat it won in the 2012 and 2017 assembly elections.
