In foreigners’ rape case, Andhra Police secures conviction in 57 days

Andhra Pradesh Police has convicted two accused in an attempt to rape case in just 57 days after completing the prosecution process in 14 days.

State Director General of Police KV Rajendranath Reddy told PTI, “We were able to take the decision so quickly after a scientific investigation process. This case highlights the tremendous coordination between the police, prosecuting lawyers and the judiciary.”

The case pertains to the attempted rape of a Lithuanian national passing through a forest path in SPS Nellore district on March 8, 2022.

Two men tried to rape her but she managed to escape. Later he lodged a complaint with the police.

“Within three hours, both the accused were arrested and by March 16, we filed the charge sheet in the court. We quickly listed the case for prosecution as the woman had to return to her country,” the DGP said.

The trial was completed in three days and the Nellore sessions court completed the examination of the evidence in one day.

The court heard the arguments of both the parties on April 6 and 7 and reserved the verdict. The verdict was pronounced on May 5.

The accused, I Saikumar and Syed Mohammad Abid, have been sentenced to seven years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of Rs 15,000.

The woman has sent a video message to the DGP, thanking the state police for speedy conviction.

DGP Rajendranath said, “This case gave an example of how the criminal justice system can work effectively through proper coordination. This was the first time such a case was tried in not only the state but also the country and the accused had been arrested. Was convicted within a few days.” ,

The senior police officer said Andhra Pradesh filed chargesheets in 92.21 per cent of POCSO and rape cases in 2021, which is the highest in the country.

“We have taken several steps with a focused holistic approach so as to speed up the delivery of justice by minimizing the delay in arresting the accused and filing of chargesheets. This will have a deterrent effect and also eliminate the scope of witnesses, ” Said Mr. Rajendranath attended.
