Incomplete sewerage work adds to traffic jams

Due to the drizzle on Tuesday, the half-completed sewerage work across the city added to the traffic jam.

Traffic was restored till Monday morning under pillar number 192 of Attapur, where floods had halted vehicular movement for hours. “Had the pipeline work in the Chintal area been completed, the floods could have been prevented. But water washed over the ground and flooded the area,” said a Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation worker overseeing the cleanliness drive.

The civic body has deployed an earth mover to clear the debris.

Incomplete cable and pipeline work on the service road, and the diversion of the service road between Narsingi and Gachibowli created a bottleneck in the morning rush hour as rain reduced visibility.

While the Strategic Nala Development Program has taken off in a big way, most of the work is still ongoing. The Mayor inaugurated the box drain work in Shaikpet Colony on 18 June. Other civic officials also paid similar respects last month at Toli Chowki’s Virasat Nagar, Machabolram, Nallakunta, DRF Training Center at Nagole, Nanal Nagar and other parts of the city. Result? Roads have shrunk, and mud and debris lay all around. Commuting has become a challenge.

But there were bright spots during the rains as the Toli Chowki area did not get flooded and the new flyover connecting Biodiversity Junction with Shaikpet eased the flow of traffic. The municipal authorities managed to finish the box drain work at Jiyaguda just before the current monsoon season.

“The point where the new Shaikpet flyover enters Tolichowki is a major choke-point and it got worse due to rain. The streets near the Adams Cafe have been dug up and littered with garbage. Road no. 12 Banjara Hills was no better, potholes turned into puddles,” said Ashish Choudhary, who was stuck in traffic on Tuesday.
