IND vs SA: ‘Not worried about what happened in 2018’ – Temba Bavuma

South Africa’s white-ball captain Temba Bavuma believes a series win over India in the upcoming three-match ODI will give the home team “a lot of confidence” going forward.

India last visited South Africa in 2018, after they won the six-match series 5-1. It was also their first ODI series win at Rainbow Nation.

“We have to fix things in the next ODI series against India. I’m not too concerned with what happened in that 2018 series. I’m more concerned with setting my playing style and applying my strategy to good effect.

“The ODI series win against India will give us a lot of confidence and some momentum ahead of the games,” Bavuma was quoted as saying by ‘Daily Maverick’.

Bavuma, who was part of the Proteas’ winning campaign in the recently concluded three-match Test series, feels his campaign in the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup helped change the perception about South Africa’s white-ball squads. Of.

At the mega event in the UAE, South Africa won four of their five group matches, only to miss out on the semi-finals on net run-rates due to a loss in the first match of the tournament against Australia.

“Perceptions are changing about this South African white-ball team. Earlier it was said that we don’t have the ability to counter spin and we struggled in foreign conditions. I feel like we have proved many people wrong in the T20 World Cup.

“We have to prepare for the next T20 World Cup in Australia, which will require another change in mindset.”

He said that the ODI team should match the performance of the T20 team during the World Cup in UAE.

He said, ‘Maybe we should focus on what the T20 team has achieved in recent times. That team didn’t put much emphasis on the results, but on the process.

“We really understood how we wanted to play. There was a lot of energy and intensity especially with respect to our fielding,” he said.

“Then we start winning consistently. Since the start of the West Indies series last June, we have won 13 out of 16 T20Is. This is something we want to replicate across all formats. If we are in our ODI approach, Bringing the same energy, we’ll build more confidence and momentum, and bigger results will come.”
