India-Australia Relations: Piyush Goyal in Melbourne as part of 3-day Australia visit

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday visited the University of Melbourne as part of his three-day visit to Australia. Goyal expressed the deep bond of friendship, brotherhood and trust that PM Morrison and PM Modi have built over the years “even though the geopolitical situation is not the most promising right now, especially for our two countries, in the neighbourhood.”

He was accompanied by Australia’s Minister of Trade Dan Tehan and Alan Myers, Chancellor, University of Melbourne, Melbourne Law School at the University of Melbourne.

“University Australiaparticularly welcomes the terms of the agreements that focus on students, education and research,” said Professor Nicola Phillips, University of Melbourne Provost.

“We know that education is a key pillar of Australia-India relations. And it is excellent that this interim free trade agreement opens up new opportunities for students to study and work in Australia and Melbourne,” he said.

Goyal began his visit on Tuesday, days after signing the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA).

India and Australia signed the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (IndAus ECTA) on 2 April.

During the visit, Goyal will hold extensive discussions with his Australian counterpart Dan Tehan MP, Minister of Trade, Tourism and Investment, on taking ECTA forward, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement.

The ECTA is India’s first trade agreement with a developed country after more than a decade and provides an institutional mechanism to improve trade between the two countries.

The Union Minister will also visit the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground and address the Australia-India Chamber of Commerce and Australia apart from interacting with the Indian media. He will later visit the Shiva Vishnu Temple in Melbourne and participate in a community event with the Indian diaspora. Australia is India’s 17th largest trading partner and India is Australia’s 9th largest trading partner.
