India calls for de-escalation of tension in Taiwan

New Delhi:

In its first reaction to the Taiwan crisis, India on Friday said it was concerned by the developments and called for avoiding unilateral action to change the status quo in the region.

India also advocated for restraint and underlined the need for efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region.

China launched major military exercises around Taiwan as part of a reaction to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recent visit to Taiwan.

“Like many other countries, India is also concerned about the recent developments,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said at a media briefing.

“We urge restraint, avoid unilateral action to change the status quo, efforts to de-escalate tensions and maintain peace and stability in the region,” he said.
