India can replace West in Russia’s pharmaceutical market, claims Moscow

Moscow : Russian envoy to India Denis Alipov said on Friday that Indian pharmaceutical companies can replace the demand of Western companies in Russia.

The West has imposed several sanctions on Russia due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The crisis began on 24 February, when Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military attack on the Eastern European country.

However, earlier this month, Alipov said Moscow welcomed India’s independent foreign policy amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Alipov, quoted by Sputnik news agency, told Rossiya 24 broadcaster, “The withdrawal of many Western companies from the Russian market and the emptying of places that may actually be occupied by Indian companies in many industries, especially from pharmaceuticals.”

Alipov, who was appointed as the Russian envoy to India, said India is a “world pharmacy” and a leading manufacturer of pharmaceutical copies no worse than the original.

Last year, India’s Vaccine Friendship initiative cemented its reputation as the “Pharmacy of the World”. World leaders publicly lauded India’s efforts to rapidly expand production and supply of vaccines at the critical juncture of the pandemic.

The decision to switch manufacturers to pharmaceuticals comes at a time when Russia is under a slew of Western sanctions. Now Russia wants to increase economic engagement with non-European countries.

Speaking on relations with India, Alipov said, “The Prime Minister (Modi) and the Indian leadership complement the state’s consistently independent policy in international affairs. We have said time and again that we welcomed India’s independent foreign policy.” and strengthened its role and its influence in the international arena.”

The Russian envoy also appreciated the Indian foreign policy stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
