Cucumber is exported under two categories – cucumbers and gherkins, which are prepared and preserved by vinegar or acetic acid, and cucumbers and gherkins, which are provisionally preserved.

Cucumber cultivation, processing and exports began in India in the early 1990s with modest beginnings in Karnataka and later spread to the neighboring states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. India produces about 15 percent of the world’s cucumber requirement.

Gherkins is currently exported to more than 20 countries, with major destinations being North America, European countries and ocean countries such as the United States, France, Germany, Australia, Spain, South Korea, Canada, Japan, Belgium, Russia, China, Sri Lanka is another. Israel.

Apart from its export potential, the cucumber industry plays an important role in the generation of rural employment. In India, cucumber is cultivated under contract farming by about 90,000 small and marginal farmers with an annual production area of ​​65,000 acres.

Processed cucumbers are exported in bulk as industrial raw materials and in ready-to-eat jars.

Bulk production is still capturing a high percentage of the cucumber market. There are about 51 major companies producing and exporting cucumber in drums and ready-to-eat consumer packs in India.

APEDA has been instrumental in promoting export of processed vegetables and is providing financial assistance for development of infrastructure and enhancing quality of processed cucumbers, promotion of products in the international market and implementation of food safety management systems in processing. On an average, a cucumber farmer produces 4 metric tonnes per acre per crop and earns around Rs 80,000 with a net income of Rs 40,000.

Gherkins have a 90-day crop and farmers take two crops a year. Processing plants of international standards have been set up here to meet the requirement of overseas buyers.

All Gherkin manufacturing and exporting companies are either ISO, BRC, IFS, FSSC 22000 certified and HACCP certified or hold all certifications. Many companies have adopted social audit.

It ensures that all statutory benefits are given to the employees.

APEDA is also focusing on value addition of Cucumber to enhance the export value of the product.
