India has promised help to Nepal in recovering from the pandemic

New Delhi: India has pledged to help Nepal recover from its pandemic, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledging assistance in a meeting with Nepal’s new Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, an official said on Wednesday.

The meeting is also known as the United Nations Climate Summit (COP 26) in Glasgow on Tuesday. This was Modi’s first meeting with Deuba after assuming office in July.

“The two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, including in the context of the ongoing efforts against the COVID-19 pandemic,” a statement from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said.

“The two leaders noted the excellent cooperation between India and Nepal during the pandemic, especially by ensuring the free flow of goods across borders along with the supply of vaccines, medicines and medical equipment from India to Nepal. Both the leaders also agreed to work together towards recovery after the pandemic.”

India suspended exports of COVID-19 vaccines in April to focus on vaccinating its population following a sudden spike in infections. Last month, however, New Delhi resumed supplies overseas.

In a Twitter post on Tuesday, Modi had described his meeting with Deuba as “productive”.

In his post, Modi had said, “Subjects related to fighting the global pandemic and advancing sustainable development are key parts of our bilateral friendship.”

Another issue was on the agenda of the Sustainable Development Dialogue.

“It is important that we keep working together for sustainable development. He correctly highlighted the threat of climate change in the Himalayan region,” Modi said in another Twitter post along with a picture with Deuba.

Modi had a telephonic conversation with Deuba in July after the veteran Nepalese leader secured a trust vote in the restored House of Representatives. During the call, Deuba thanked Modi and shared views on strengthening ties between the two neighboring countries. Bilateral ties had turned strained under former prime minister KP Sharma Oli after India opened the strategically important 80-km-long road connecting the Lipulekh Pass with Dharchula in Uttarakhand in May last year.
